About this property

VENDOR COMMENT:

What surprised us most was how quiet it feels once you step through to the gardens. You’re right in the middle of Chapel, yet somehow it becomes completely peaceful at the rear, with views stretching up towards Sparrowpit. We also loved the chance to completely rework the cottage properly rather than simply redecorate it. Almost everything was taken back to stone and rebuilt with care
rewired, replastered, reinsulated, refloored and reconfigured
which gave us the opportunity to create something that feels modern and comfortable while still keeping the character that made us fall in love with it in the first place.

MAIN DESCRIPTION:

Church Brow has long been one of the defining streets of Chapel-en-le-Frith. The old stone terraces, cobbled approach and elevated position have made it one of the most photographed parts of the town, frequently painted and recognised for its place within the history of the Peak District.

Behind that familiar frontage, this cottage has been completely reworked. Rewired, replastered, reinsulated and entirely rethought internally, the result is something far removed from what you might expect from a period home of this scale. The finish is exceptionally considered throughout, balancing modern design with the character that gives the property its identity.

The kitchen is where that balance becomes clearest. Bright, contemporary and finished to a standard rarely seen in homes of this size, it brings together clean modern design with genuinely high-end appliances and conveniences, including a Miele steam oven more commonly found in far larger homes. Elsewhere, retained decorative beams within the lounge preserve the warmth and charm of the original cottage, harking back to the extensive history inside these stone walls.

The layout has been reshaped around space rather than bedroom count, and it changes the feel of the cottage entirely. What was once a more traditional two bedroom arrangement is now centred around a single principal bedroom of unusual but perfect scale, creating a sense of openness that’s rarely found in homes of this era. It’s a layout that simply works once you experience it in person, giving the house a calmer and more luxurious feel than the floorplan alone might suggest.

The bathroom continues the same approach seen throughout the property, modern in finish but restrained enough to remain in keeping with the age and character of the cottage.

For buyers needing additional accommodation, the option remains to return the property to a two bedroom layout, to be negotiated as part of the sale if desired. Equally though, there is something quite special about the way the house has been configured today, and it’s difficult to fully appreciate that without spending time in the space itself.

Outside, the gardens add another layer to how fantastically unique this property really is. The garden space to the rear naturally creates a sense of community between the cottages, the sort of place where morning coffee can easily turn into conversation with neighbours who have all come to value the setting in much the same way. Despite being right in the centre of Chapel-en-le-Frith, with cafés, shops and everyday amenities only moments away on foot, it remains surprisingly and remarkably peaceful once you step out behind the cottages - near silent with the exception of birdsong.

Beyond sits a more private garden with open views stretching towards Sparrowpit, along with a separate garden office already connected with power, water and internet. Whether used for home working, creative projects or simply somewhere to retreat to with the doors open in summer, it gives the property another layer of flexibility that’s rarely expected from a cottage of this scale.

Private parking sits to the rear alongside the garden spaces, something almost unheard of for a cottage of this age and position, particularly on one of Chapel’s most historic streets. It’s a detail that quietly transforms day-to-day living here, allowing the charm and history of Church Brow to remain uninterrupted by the compromises period homes so often demand.

More than anything though, this is a home that feels deeply personal. Every decision within it has been made with care, not simply to modernise, but to create somewhere that feels warm, distinctive and genuinely enjoyable to live in. For the right buyer, it’s the kind of place that’s difficult to forget once you’ve stepped through the door.
